BATH, SOMERSET

Distance: Train from London, 1 hour 20 minutes.

Built for pleasure and relaxation, beautiful Bath has been a wellbeing destination since Roman times. The waters are still a big draw, both at the ancient Roman Baths and the thoroughly modern Thermae Bath Spa, which houses the only natural thermal hot springs in Britain you can bathe in.


Bath's stunning honey-coloured Georgian architecture is straight from a Jane Austen novel – highlights include the iconic Royal Crescent and the majestic Circus. There’s plenty to see beyond the city, too, with stunning Somerset countryside to explore, as well as attractions like Stonehenge, Avebury and Longleat Safari Park.

WHITSTABLE, KENT

Distance: The train from from St Pancras takes 1hr 13 minutes

This little town on the north Kent coast is still an atmospheric place to head for a hit of vitamin B12 – via a dozen or so oysters – then a scrunch along the shingle shore, spotting Second World War sea forts across the waves and seals in the harbour. There are plenty of places to eat and a thriving micropub scene here.


If you decide to stay: While hotels here are scarce, the Cave Hotel is only a short 15 minute cab drive away and is the ideal romantic end to a day at the beach.





Oxford

Distance from London: Trains run from Paddington and Marylebone stations and take 1 hour.

A visit to Oxford, which dates back to Saxon times, is a trip into the brains of a nation. Tour the hallowed halls of the university and follow in the footsteps of Prime Ministers, poets and the one and only Harry Potter.


For sightseeing, take a trip on a punt (a traditional flat-bottomed boat) or if you prefer to stick to dry land, take a hop-on and off bus tour. If you're opting to travel by car, make sure to check out Park and ride which makes sightseeing a blast.


Fashion lovers (and bargain hunters) flock to nearby Bicester Village, a designer shopping outlet selling big names brands like Ralph Lauren, Nike and UGG at discount prices.
