Located on the banks of the iconic Amstel River, The Amstel is a true gem among luxury hotels in Amsterdam. This historic landmark dates back to 1867 and exudes elegance and grandeur at every turn. With its lavishly decorated rooms, Michelin-starred restaurants, and impeccable service, The Amstel ensures an unforgettable stay. Come with us as we experience true luxury at this landmark hotel in The Netherlands.
On arrival…
We arrived to the Amstel late afternoon where we were warmly greeted by the friendly Duncan, who showed us around the property. I couldn't help but be distracted by the stunning architecture of the foyer, with its high ceilings, chandeliers, and grand double staircase fit for royalty. While I got lost in the beauty of it all, my partner attentively listened to the fascinating historical facts shared by Duncan.
Founded by Dr Samuel Sarphati, a leading physician in the 19th Century, the hotel was created as an architectural monument. A palace on the banks of the Amstel, which would put Amsterdam on the map internationally. With beautifully detailed arches from the “Golden Age” and the richly decorated lobby, the hotel has attracted many prominent figures and guests, who wanted to experience the glamour of the Amstel Hotel since it opened on April 27, 1867.
When the hotel decided to restore the original architecture in 2020, they asked the help of all local children up to 12 years old to choose a name for the famous Amstel Lions, which were birthed Sammy & Friendly.
Straight to the bar…
Without delay, we headed straight to the bar. After soaking in the large bath in our room for about an hour, we prepared ourselves for an evening at our favorite spot in any hotel - the bar. The rooms at The Amstel Hotel are truly unique, featuring beautiful toile de jouy wallpaper throughout, incredibly comfortable beds, and spacious vintage-style bathrooms.
The hotel offers an all-day dining restaurant on the canal level and a bar with a large patio offering breathtaking river views. Having already enjoyed a fabulous breakfast at the restaurant, we decided to spend the evening at the bar. The bartender at The Amstel Bar is incredibly talented, crafting cocktails with unique and sophisticated flavors. We also ordered some bar nibbles, although it's hard to call oysters, caviar, and prawns mere bar snacks!
A rejuvenating morning…
The following morning, after a night of a few too many martinis, we sought relaxation at the spa. The Amstel Spa maintains its 1800s decor, featuring a large swimming pool, ancient statues, and beautiful wallpaper just like the rooms. In addition to the pool, the spa also offers a sauna, steam room, and plunge pool. While the spa is beautifully designed, we believe there is room for improvement in terms of service and use of the space, to make it the ultimate destination for rejuvenation.
Staying at The Amstel Hotel was a journey into what I can only describe as a royal haven of the 1920’s. The property serves as a testament to the timeless allure of opulence, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a realm where classic elegance never go out of fashion.
